FATHER AND SON TEAM CHASE HAT-TRICK ON UD TRUCKS LICHTENBURG 200
The father and son team of Tony and Michael Gouveia will be chasing a hat-trick of wins on the UD Trucks Lichtenburg 200, round three of the Northern region Off Road Championship, on May 12.
The Gouveias, in the Gearbox Services BAT, scored comfortable overall Special Vehicle and Class B wins on the Barberspan 200 and the RFS Magalies events. They will be hot favourites to repeat the dose on the Lichtenburg event but face some stiff opposition in both Class B and Class P.
There will be strong Class B challengers Johan Steyn and Shaun van der Bert in a Zarco, veteran Peter Pfumfei (WPP), Clive Sutherland (Jimco) and John Boxhoorn will again be making a trip across the border from Botswana. Former track racer Joe Putter will be making his off road debut in a singleseater Raceco, and there will also be a welcome return to racing for Danie Vos and Andre Botha in the Vossies Racing Sandmaster.
Hendrik Pienaar and Andre Nagel (Sandmaster) add to an interesting Class B entry, but the Gouveia’s will also be under attack from the Class P brigade. Consistency is a forte for former national champion Giel Nel and Johan de Klerk (Portable Shade Zarco) but will need to up their pace to catch the Gouveias and keep ahead of Kobus Bekker/Morne Calitz (Raceco) and Francois Conradie and Andrew van der Westhuizen in a BAT.
On the Production Vehicle front Hennie Lemmer and Paul Slabbert (Mitsubishi Colt) will be looking to again dominate proceedings in Class D. The biggest challenge is likely to come from the experienced Andre Coetzee and Johan Pieterse in a Land Rover Defender.
A couple of firsts see Jaco Venter (Nissan Hardbody) and Elgar Rademeyer (Mitsubishi Colt) having their maiden outings as drivers. Venter will be joined by father Vernon who passes up a drive in his Class P car, while Rademeyer will have son Kevin making his debut as a co-driver.
The Boshoff brothers, Ian and Gene, lead the challenge in Class E in a pair of LG Toyota Hilux entries. Ian will again be accompanied by Douw Grobler with Lotter Klein sitting alongside Gene.
Opposition will come from the father and son combination of Lappies and Cailo Labuschagne (Ford Ranger) who are in need of a good result and Juandre Coetzee and Pieter Jacobs who will be having their first outing in a Toyota Hilux.
Race headquarters, the start/finish and the designated service park will all be located at the Lichtenburg race track. The Donaldson Prologue to determine race grid positions will be held over a 23 kilometre route and will start at 09:00.
The race proper will start at 12:00 and will be run over three loops of 70 kilometres. Spectator maps are available on www.saoffraodracing.co.za and public entrance to race headquarters, the designated service park and spectator areas along the route is free of charge.
